Elysian Fields, also known as Elysium or Elysian Plain, stems from Greek mythology, originally meaning the paradise to which heroes on whom the gods conferred immortality were sent.
This is my personal investigation of the monuments at Vestre Kirkegård, exploring their ornamentations, symbols, and inscriptions. I was interested in exploring the cemetery as an archive. What do the inclusions and exclusions tell us about the society of the time?
I wondered about the people who used to be. Who were they? What was their lives like? What did they wish to be remembered for?
On the 17th of May 2023, from 13.53 – 16.20 in the afternoon, I took 323 photographs at Vestre Kirkegård in Copenhagen, Denmark. The monuments included in this publication is a personal selection, all of which had a particular quality that captivated me, and can be understood as an alternative mapping of the cemetery.
