Det Grønne (The Green Spaces) is a project developed in collaboration with the Department of Oncology at Rigshospitalet, Copenhagen. It explores how visual interventions can transform the atmosphere and narrative of a room.
Implemented in 2022 with funding from Kræftens Bekæmpelse and Johannes Fog Fonden, the project responds to a growing need identified by medical staff: the lack of private areas for sensitive conversations about patients’ mental and physical health. Our aim was to make existing hallway spaces feel more inviting, encouraging privacy and confidentiality in dialogue between staff, patients, and relatives.
The design combines both physical and narrative dimensions, creating calm, supportive environments within an otherwise clinical setting.
A peer-reviewed article based on the project was later published:
Nature-Inspired Green Spaces to Enhance Communication Between Patients and Nurses – A Qualitative Design Study (Idunn, 2024).
We co-authored the paper with researchers from Rigshospitalet, presenting findings on how nature-inspired design can improve dialogue between patients and nurses in oncology wards..
